SEVABHARATHI is a socio-cultural organisation carrying out service activities in the fields of Education, Health, Cultural Values (Samskar), Economic Development, Village Development and Orphanages (Anbu Illam). based on the ideals propounded by great men like Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr K.B. Hedgewar and Sri M.S.Golwalkar in order to bring about social integration and all-round development of the nation. Since its inception in 1989, Sevabharathi has progressively expanded its activities to cover all the 28 states and 7 union territories of India. At present (Vijayadasami 2007), there are more than 45,500 service activities in over 600 districts of the country. Sevabharathi and its sister organisations, under the umbrella of Rashtra Sevabharathi, carry out more than 1,00,000 service activities across the country. Apart from regular service activities, Sevabharathi also undertakes relief and rehabilitation work after major calamities. The role of Sevabharathi in the relief work undertaken immediately after the earthquakes of Latur & Osmanabad in Maharashtra and Bhuj in Gujarat, and the Tsunami in Tamilnadu came in for international appreciation. It is foremost among service organisations in Tamilnadu in rendering instant rescue, relief and rehabilitation services whenever calamity strikes. The overall outlook of Sevabharathi Tamilnadu is nationalistic and aims at strengthening the social fabric in the State. It focuses on uplifting the downtrodden rural masses and integrating the isolated people in tribal belts with the national mainstream. In parallel, a good amount of work is also done in the slums surrounding the cities and towns of Tamilnadu. As of Vijayadasami 2007, over 7,300 service activities are being rendered by Sevabharathi Tamilnadu. All these are possible due to active participation from the public and the sincere involvement of nearly 20,000 volunteers. Around 150 of the volunteers devote their time fully for this cause. These service activities benefit lakhs of people – cutting across the boundaries of religion, caste, language and gender. All this ultimately strengthens our great nation
